I'm only half Irish -- ok, my Mom found out she is 2% like weak milk. My Dad's side is rabid Irish -- but the crazy rabid like racists, anti-abortion, homophobe Irish. Hey -- we all have family issues. I just returned from the trip to Mom (who is sane) from hell because my racist, homophobic Republican, very angry about everything sister couldn't stop ranting.
Sooooooo, today is a huge day in Ireland. Irish voters travel home from around the world methinks is really good news. I generally find haters to also be skinflints.
The government and sane political parties are backing a Yes vote. Those I have heard on the No side who have been interviewed by BBC don't even sound remotely similar to our homegrown nutjobs -- they just have a problem with the term, "marriage." Sure, there are virulent homophobes in Ireland. That's why the Catholic Church hasn't been driven out like snakes.
I'm actually staying up tonight to see if the results will be in for EDT.
Cheers to my Irish Sisters and Brothers!!!! So much struggle on so many issues just during my lifetime. I lost a cousin on Bloody Sunday. Read with horror about the Magdalene Laundries, then the massive child abusive at the dirty hands of priests and nuns, then the utter murder of Savita Halappanavar by denying her a medically urgent abortion, then, everything the Catholic Church has done to destroy families and women in particular.
Let the good folks win, love and marry in the beautiful open air.
Pimp for the land of my ancestors, a song sung at my Dad's funeral.
